It is very easy to fall in love with the fantastic wildlife of the arctics and certainly a visit to the amazing archipelago of Svalbard can initiate such feelings! It is guaranteed to have a truly memorable wildlife experience, particularly if it involves a circumnavigation of the archipelago in a specially chartered two-master schooner named the ‘Noorderlicht’. The 16-day itinerary with this superb ship around Spitsbergen delivered some impressive highlights amongst the encounters with 18 Polar Bears, 210+ Walruses, 14 Arctic Foxes, 40 Ivory Gulls and, Fin and Blue Whales as well as the stupendous glaciated landscape and the lovely High Arctic flora. All in all any visit to this fascinating place offers a life long experience for visitors!
There were several representatives of the various cruise vessels picking up folks from Longyearbyen airport, hovering around in arrivals bearing small placards. Also there was Arjen Drost, our expedition leader from the Noorderlicht, well over two metres tall and with an orange ‘Noorderlicht’ life buoy around his neck. Arjen is a real character and a very well prepaired expedition leader. His knowledge of the area is outstanding so as his photography skills which he was very happy to share with out team of Birdquesters!
